International Travel Requirements

The Office of Education Abroad is responsible for maintaining the risk management standards of students, administrators, and faculty participating in education abroad experiences.

Requirements for Students Based on Program Types

All Ðǿմ«Ã½ students traveling internationally need to follow specific requirements related to safety and each type of program will have slightly different requirements, all contained within the application. Any student traveling abroad can also make an advising appointment through the Office of Education Abroad so that we can fully support your experience. 

All Ðǿմ«Ã½ students going on a faculty-led or faculty-designed study abroad program must apply through the Office of Education Abroad to ensure that safety precautions are followed. Students will not be permitted to participate in a Ðǿմ«Ã½ program abroad unless they have filed the appropriate application.

Ðǿմ«Ã½ students going on a faculty-led or faculty-designed study abroad programs are required to attend a health and safety pre-departure orientation. Students will not be permitted to participate in a Ðǿմ«Ã½ program abroad unless they attended this pre-departure orientation.

All undergraduate students participating in a semester, year or summer program must apply through the Office of Education Abroad in accordance with its deadlines in order to ensure that risk management procedures are followed.

In order to maintain Ðǿմ«Ã½ student status during their time abroad and be allowed to transfer credit to Ðǿմ«Ã½, students must complete the appropriate application and all requirements in the Office of Education Abroad application system, which includes attending two pre-departure orientations: 

  1. A health and safety orientation, and 
  2. An academic and cultural orientation 

 

Graduate students can only take part in a study abroad program approved by their department, school, and/or advisor. 

Graduate students participating in study abroad programs must apply through the Office of Education Abroad in order to ensure that risk management procedures are followed.

In order to maintain Ðǿմ«Ã½ student status during their time abroad and be allowed to transfer credit to Ðǿմ«Ã½, students must complete the appropriate application and all requirements in the Office of Education Abroad application system, which includes attending a pre-departure orientation on health and safety. 

All Ðǿմ«Ã½ in accordance with its deadlines in order to ensure that risk management procedures are followed. 

Completing this registration allows students to travel abroad using Ðǿմ«Ã½ resources, including the free International Travel Insurance.

Potential Restrictions for Students

Ðǿմ«Ã½ has established restrictions for student travel based on advisories issued by the U.S. Department of State and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The restrictions are included below along with details for student petitions and exceptions.

Travel Review & Restrictions

The U.S. Department of State and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) post travel advisories to inform travelers of particular risks associated with traveling abroad.

Ðǿմ«Ã½'s International Travel Risk Management Policy was developed over the course of multiple years by a committee of representatives from across Ðǿմ«Ã½ and considers the U.S. Department of State's and CDC's travel advisories a starting place for the review process that affects all international travel.

Page 5 of the International Travel Risk Management Policy states:

"Ðǿմ«Ã½ students are not permitted to travel to countries or areas within countries that have a level 4 advisory on the US Department of State travel advisory list. Ðǿմ«Ã½ students are permitted to travel to countries or areas with a level 1 or 2 advisory on the US Department of State travel advisory list. Ðǿմ«Ã½ students are not permitted to travel to countries, or areas within countries, that Ðǿմ«Ã½ International Travel Risk Management 6 have a level 3 travel advisory from the US Department of State unless they successfully petition to do so.

Ðǿմ«Ã½ students can travel to countries with a level 1 or 2 advisory from the Center for Disease Control. Ðǿմ«Ã½ students cannot travel to countries with a level 3 advisory from the Center for Disease Control, regardless of the Department of State travel warning, though usually a level 3 from the CDC also results in a higher advisory from the Department of State as well."
