Following Shot of Heavy Industry Engineers Walking Through Manufacturing Factory
BS/MS

About the Program

Double your opportunities in the fields of materials science and engineering with our combined bachelor’s and master’s degree from ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, one of the top research universities in the U.S. You can complete our dual degree program in just five years, and graduate ready to pursue a career as a computer-aided design technician, design engineer, materials engineer, metallurgist, product development specialist or in another role.

What to Expect

Now is an exciting time to be a materials engineer—almost every technology we rely on in the modern world relies on materials, whether automotive, biomedical, electronic, or those related to energy production and storage. As technologies evolve at an ever-increasing rate, advanced materials—and professionals who know how to develop them—are in high demand.

We educate leaders in materials engineering by combining the best attributes of small and large academic programs: personalized attention from faculty members and access to world-class equipment and mentorship from internationally renowned researchers.

Here, you’ll study the structure and composition of materials—from the electronic to the atomic. You’ll gain an in-depth knowledge of the properties and capabilities of metals, ceramics, semiconductors and composite materials.

Our students intern and go on to work with companies including Arconic Forgings and Extrusions, NASA Glenn Research Center, Lincoln Electric, GE and more. We have an excellent track record of placing our master’s students in desired positions in industry. Some choose to continue their studies by pursuing a PhD at top-tier institutions before going on to teach in the field.

Beyond the Classroom

ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ is an innovation hub, with more than 80 research facilities available to our students. In our program, you can:

  • See atomic structures in the .
  • Enable primary and secondary processing options for both structural and functional materials at the .
  • Bring your ideas to life by building prototypes at the Sears think[box].

In addition to developing your own research topics, you’ll have the chance to participate in projects funded by institutions such as NASA, the U.S. Army and the Department of Energy.

When you’re not studying or researching, you can take part in one of our student groups—the , for example. Or, network with our 20,000+ alumni who often host local gatherings.
