About the Program

Medicine is undergoing substantial transformations, thanks to rapid advances in science and technology. With a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering and a Doctor of Medicine from ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, one of the nation’s top research universities, you’ll be prepared to lead in the development and clinical deployment of new medical technology. 

Designed for medical students in either our University Program or , this dual-degree program will prepare you to partner with others on technology-based translational research teams. 

You’ll come away from our program prepared for careers in the biomedical engineering field—as a biomaterials developer, manufacturing engineer, independent consultant, doctor, biomedical scientist and more.

The department, which is shared between our highly ranked School of Medicine and , consistently is a top biomedical engineering program for graduate studies. In fact, our with Cleveland Clinic makes us one of the largest biomedical engineering enterprises in the nation—giving you unparalleled opportunities to conduct cutting-edge research.

As the department continues to evolve to match the recent accelerated pace of biomedical engineering developments, our students are working alongside our faculty to conduct interdisciplinary research. And, because of our strong integration with the biomedical engineering industry in Cleveland and beyond, you’ll have many opportunities for sponsored research and industrial training activities.

As a student, you’ll attend monthly seminars focusing on the integration of engineering and medicine, with the opportunity to present your own research and to hear and interact with other presenters.

Extend your training beyond traditional classroom and laboratory settings through independent readings and research projects. You can enhance your resume and reinforce what you learn by working in a research lab, serving as a teaching assistant or taking part in hands-on opportunities. Admission Requirements

Medical students in the University Program or are invited to apply to the MD/MS dual degree program in their first year of medical school. If you’re ready to apply, through the Department of Biomedical Engineering, as the department takes responsibility for program management. 

You should submit your medical school application instead of a separate graduate school application, including MCAT scores instead of GRE scores. The application should include a letter specifying your intended track, the department/major field designation, and a statement of purpose for seeking the combined degree.

The application process also requires:

  • $50 application fee
  • Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree from an accredited institution (either already complete, or will be complete before you enroll)
  • Unofficial transcripts
  • Current resume/CV
  • List of research experience (optional)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • International applicants: Results of TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE
