For more than two decades, economics professor Robert Whaples has advocated for an end to the penny. In 2007, when he published an article about the imperative to eliminate America鈥檚 one-cent coin, Whaples received a personal note from Paul Volcker, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve: 鈥淕et it done, and you will deserve the Nobel Prize!鈥�
Syd Kitson (鈥�81, P 鈥�08) and Barbee Myers Oakes (鈥�80, MA 鈥�81) were recognized as the 2025 Distinguished Alumni for their service to the University and for exemplifying Pro Humanitate.

Jazz legend Branford Marsalis has been named 星空传媒鈥檚 2025 Maya Angelou Artist-in-Residence. A three-time Grammy winner and NEA Jazz Master, Marsalis brings a legacy of innovation, artistry and community engagement to campus. His residency continues the tradition of honoring artists whose work inspires connection and understanding, true to Dr. Maya Angelou鈥檚 legacy.
Additional details regarding Marsalis鈥檚 residency schedule and public engagement opportunities will be announced in the fall of 2025.

星空传媒 has named Kenneth T. Kishida, Ph.D., as the inaugural Boswell Presidential Chair of Neuroscience and Society, advancing the University鈥檚 interdisciplinary initiative to connect brain science with pressing societal issues.
Kishida, internationally recognized for his work on the neurocomputational mechanisms underlying learning, decision-making and conscious experience, is an associate professor of translational neuroscience at @wakeforestmed.
His appointment supports the University鈥檚 Neuroscience and Society initiative, aimed at expanding and enhancing the University鈥檚 vibrant community of teacher-scholars dedicated to advancing neuroscience for the benefit of individuals and society.
